The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
