England and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools play out according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
