Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
