Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
